More information regarding MPA recording concert

Good afternoon everyone.

I wanted to share a little more “insight” as to how MPA recording concert night will work. I hope you are making plans to attend your child’s performance this Tuesday night at the MSHS Stratford Auditorium. This performance has been rehearsed more than anything else all year. I hope you get to hear them Tuesday night.

The Symphonic Band, under the direction of Mrs. Hood, will be performing at 6pm. Their selections are Marche from the Opera “Love for Three Oranges” by Serge Prokofiev; To a Distant Place, by Carl Strommen; and The Spirit of Orpheus by Robert W. Smith. This group of students have raised the bar for the Symphonic band. The grade level of music is higher than in the past and they are certainly rising to the occasion.

The Wind Ensemble, under the director of Mr. Waters, will be performing at 7:30pm. They will be playing Moorside March by Gustav Holst, Nimrod from “Enigma Variations” by Edward Elgar, and K2, the Savage Mountain by Julie Giroux. You may recognize the name Gustav Holst as he was the composer of The Planets, music we used two years ago for our marching band show “Spheres”. We are very proud of the work our Wind Ensemble students have put into these selections.

The auditorium doors will be open at 5:30 for the Symphonic Band. We ask you come to your specific students band program and spread out with your friends and family with masks. We do have a sitting capacity but we do not anticipate overcrowding for this event. We will ask the auditorium to clear after the first performance. If you wish to hear the other group, please wait until just prior to the performance to make sure the auditorium is not overcrowded. Once again we do not anticipate that. We will have parents and directors there to help with this matter.

This concert is going to be different than any other. It is actually a recording session and not a concert. We will not set up and play three tunes like normal, we will actually warm up-practice-and even perform selections more than once! There will be microphones, cables, video cameras, and people running around having to do with actually capturing our performances. This is going to be a wonderful keep sake for all our students and parents. It will also serve as our Music Performance Assessment recordings we will send to the Alabama Bandmasters Association for judging. Recordings sent to ABA will be audio only and will be unedited, however the video we will enjoy later will be professionally edited version and of highest quality. Because of this, we will need complete silence during the recordings. In other words try not to talk, cough, have any cell phone sounds, or get up and move around while the band is playing. Of course, we will ask you to clap at the end!!!!

We started this journey before Christmas and it has finally arrived. Thank you students and parents for everything you have done to help us through this year. Things are getting better every day and the excitement keeps building for next year and the future.

One thing is for sure, “You don’t know what you have until it’s gone”. It’s so good to have performances laid out in front of us.
