Missing 4th block music making…

My band family is on my heart and mind today. The Waters family is doing well and making blessings of our time together (as is the Hoods and the Seays). But I would be lying if I did t say how much I miss my coworkers and my band kids. This time of uncertainty has reminded me of what a privilege it is to have music in my life.

In the upcoming weeks, the directors plan to make several short instructional videos for you to enjoy. Everything from music theory to marching fundamentals. These are meant for you to possibly learn something new, but even more than that just to communicate with those we miss teaching.

Seniors, this is an especially hard time for you. In the big picture, the things you will miss out on will be small , but right now they seem huge. Stay positive and stay healthy. You have a lot to do with your lives don’t let this bump in the road become a barrier.

For everyone, nothing like this has ever happened to any of us. We are making the best choices we can each day. But this isn’t much different than learning a new piece of music. Compare this issue to the “warhorse” piece for Mpa preparation. At the start the music seems unlearnable and unplayable. You practice and listen and study….slowly things get better. Sometimes so slow you don’t realize it. Some days however it’s so hard you don’t think you will ever make it sound good. But one day things suddenly seem better. The piece slowly comes together and before you know it, you are performing it on stage making incredible music where there was once disparity and frustration. This is a life lesson taught to you by music and band. Don’t lose faith, keep practicing even when you feel there is no hope, and keep your eye on the end game.

There is an end to this, and it will eventually get here. But in the meantime, keep the faith. Pray, practice good decision making, stop with the “what if’s”, help others when it’s possible, stop worrying about the things we are missing, stop worrying about what we will do when we get back, just stop worrying about things in general. Find your blessings and hold them tight.

I look forward to the time we can spend together again. Beautiful music is in our future.
Take a deep breath, wash rinse repeat, and keep practicing.
